Brett Murray | Wild Life at Norval Foundation

December 6, 2025

Brett Murray: Wild Life, a major survey of sculpture by one of South Africa’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, opened at Norval Foundation on 6 December 2025.

Curated by Karel Nel, the exhibition brings together over 80 sculptures spanning four decades of Murray’s career, including a number of brand new works being exhibited for the first time.

As the 2025 winner of the Villa Extraordinary Award for Sculpture from the Claire and Eduardo Villa Trust, the artist would like to acknowledge their contribution in helping to manifest the exhibition and a monograph to be published early next year.

Brett Murray has long been celebrated for his satirical social commentary. In Wild Life the animal world mirrors our own, exploring human behaviour with wit, but also empathy.

The extensive exhibition traces Murray’s sculptural practice from his politically charged works of the 1980s to his more recent reflective works. Discover more about the exhibition and catalogue here.

Located in the Tokai region of Cape Town, the Norval Foundation stands as a testament to modern and contemporary art from the African continent and its diaspora. Read more about the exhibition on the Norval Foundation website here.
