DENBY MEYER
(b. 1966 Johannesburg , South Africa)

“We don’t always see the beauty in the landscapes or the everyday events around us, and I like to think that my paintings are observations of that.  That I am recording that which we don’t always have time to stop and look at or appreciate. A way of really looking at things. Sometimes it may be how the light catches the buildings in the city, or another time the clouds over the mountains in the distance, or even the comfort one feels when observing how friends meet at a street café. I think my paintings are a personal reflection of the many aspects of life around us, and while I like them to be honest, I don’t necessarily seek out that which is disturbing or unpleasant. I want them to be a visual appreciation of an experience, which may or may not resonate with the viewer, but at least leave them with a sense of satisfaction.”

Denby Meyer is a fine artist living in Cape Town, South Africa. Her paintings are quiet and sensitive observations of peaceful and contented scenes from life, offering a moment of calm and respite amidst what seems like an increasingly noisy world. The paintings often evoke fond memories and nostalgia. Perhaps you were on holiday and remember the feeling of deep relaxation while you sat on the beach, or chatted and laughed in a sidewalk cafe for hours without noticing the passing time Denby’s paintings gently remind us of the way it felt to be there. As the daughter of renowned artist John Meyer, she grew up surrounded by art and was encouraged from a young age to paint and draw. After attaining a Liberal Arts Degree, she began painting professionally in 1990, and has been represented by the Everard Read in South Africa and London for over 20 years, where she has participated in several joint exhibitions, as well as a number of solo exhibitions. With an enduring career spanning over 20 years, she has built up a substantial body of work, and her quiet, reflective style seems more relevant now than ever.
