Teresa Kutala Firmino’s family history is a complex one, with both sets of her grandparents having fled civil war. Firmino was born to a Congolese father and an Angolan mother in 1993 in Pomfret, a town in the North West province of South Africa, where many of the former soldiers of the country’s 32 Battalion—a unit of the South African army founded in 1975 that fought in Angola—settled after the Angolan war. 

Lionel Smit's new book Transitions has been released.

The work of South African artist, Gerhard Marx, featured at a symposium at the Courtauld Institute in London in June 2023. 'The Art and Architecture of Mapping: Visual and Material Approaches to Cartographic Objects' foregrounded such questions as: how do maps operate as representations, and how do culturally situated understandings of space shape how they are created, seen and read.

South African artist, Lady Skollie’s exhibition as this year’s Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Arts, launched in June 2023 at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, South Africa.

In this video, Lady Skollie discusses how, in this body of work the hole or cave becomes a metaphor for tackling the complexity of Brown identities in South Africa.

Sat in the gallery of Everard Read London, the pair talk through the colour and light of South Africa that comes through in the artist’s paintings, the poetic titles of Let there be Light, and the musical inspiration behind the work.

‘Well this work here at the Everard Read gallery absolutely sings with life and you can hear the music, you can see the figures dancing to it and moving to it, the colour just pops out at you’.

Okuro uses Fleeting Moment, an artwork made for Hartslief’s recent exhibition with Everard Read London, Shadows and Reflections, to discuss the decisions we make in the quiet moments of the everyday –

‘I love the quiet, dimly lit painting “Fleeting Moment”, by contemporary South African artist Sasha Hartslief. She employs deft brushstrokes in muted tones to create atmospheres where light and shadow play off one another, tenderly capturing moments plucked from daily life. Moments that remind us of the inherent complexity of living with ourselves. Her characters are rarely aware of a viewer, immersed in their own worlds, but worlds any of us might easily slip into — because they feel like fragments from the simple but layered business of being human.

In “Fleeting Moment”, a slim, solitary woman stands in a pocket of a softly lit room with her back to us. Everything is painted in soft hues of brown, yellow and green. The woman’s hands are on her waist and her head is slightly bent. Her posture suggests a certain disquiet. Pausing to stand in the middle of the room reveals she’s lost in thought about something. Whatever it is, it is likely to require a decision from her on what to say or do next.’

Having walked through Bailey’s Let there be Light at Boughton House with the artist, Forbes travel and culture contributor, Joanne Shurvell writes –

‘The works at Boughton House and in the London gallery are eclectic, both in themes and materials used, which include enamel, oil and house paint and varnishes. The paintings show figures within imaginary landscapes yet there is a strong link to Beezy’s South African heritage with near extinct African animals in the paintings and a common motif is spheres representing fallen angels. These fallen angels can be seen as representative of the country Beezy came from as well as of those whose actions have contributed to the problems of our planet as a whole. These fallen angels are transformed into bronze sculptural works reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti, including the upside down angel sculpture on the lawn, in a brilliant Yves Klein blue. Beezy Bailey describes his art as “balm for a mad world” and we can all use some of that.’

As part of a continuing series showcasing the best of London’s public and commercial art exhibitions,  Chaundy considers how the South African multi-media artist has come to exhibit at the ‘English Versailles’.

From learning to draw at the Byam Shaw School of Art through to exhibiting in New York with Dave Matthews, the podcast reveals how Bailey’s fascinating encounters and experiences have made him the established artist that he is today.

With the backdrop of two concurrent exhibitions in London and Boughton House, the article explores Bailey’s journey to becoming one of SA’s most prolific and interesting artists.

Glyn-Jones heralds Daniel Naudé’s patience and consideration in creating The Bovine Prophecy – 

‘Over a period of ten years, Naudé travelled to the beaches of the Wild Coast, South Africa, to photograph the indigenous cattle that frequent these shores. The process called for patience, with Naudé scouting the area, waiting for a particular animal to be in just the right place at the right time. The shutter release would signal that moment when Naudé would, after careful consideration, transform the animal into an iconic image’.

During November 2021 Jeffrey Deitch and Black Rock Senegal present Self-Addressed, an exhibition of self-portraits by contemporary African artists curated by American artist, Kehinde Wiley. For this landmark exhibition, Wiley invited a selection of contemporary African artists living throughout the world to each produce a self-portrait. Together these portraits present a new exploration of identity, perception, and self-regard within the global stage through the lens of figuration, exploring notions of perspective, authorship and control within acts of expression that directly address the self. The exhibition of self-portraits offers an examination of the myth of the monolithic ‘Africa’ and an exploration of contemporary artists’ visual definitions of what it means to be ‘African’ or ‘of Africa.’

Teresa Kutala Firmino’s self-portrait The Imagined Self was selected to be included in this exhibition. Her portrait is concerned with the life-changing event she recently underwent with the premature birth of her first child, the physical changes to her body and the psychological impact of becoming a mother.

MANDELA: A LIFE'S JOURNEY
A collaboration with artist John Meyer and Everard Read's CIRCA Gallery

To honour Mandela Day celebrations on Sunday 18 July, Rand Merchant Bank collaborated with artist John Meyer and Everard Read's CIRCA Gallery to create a virtual tour of Meyer’s series of paintings which portray the life and times of Nelson Mandela.

Sculptor and painter, Guy Ferrer is a humanist at heart, fascinated by the range of possibilities of existing and past cultures.

In a new exhibition in Perpignan, France, Ferrer gives us his ethereal vision of the deep nature of man. Our insatiable quest for hedonism and materiality is confronted with an innate need to see further and higher in another sphere which touches the divine.

The exhibition, entitled De la matière à l'esprit (From Matter to Spirit), celebrates the multidisciplinary nature of Ferrer’s practice and is presented across three locations - large paintings at the Contemporary Art Centre of the City of Perpignan, bronze sculpture at the Hyacinthe Rigaud Art Museum in the vestibule of the Perpignan Town Hall, and drawings at the Castang Art Project gallery. The exhibition continues until October 2021.

OBITUARY: VELAPHI MZIMBA
1959 - 2021

MZIMBA USED HIS BRUSH AND CANVAS TO RESTORE THE DIGNITY AND STATURE OF AFRICANS

By his first solo exhibition in 1981 at the Carlton Hotel, a gallery run by the South African Association of Arts, 22 year old Velaphi Mzimba, had found a voice to contribute to the struggle for a humane and equitable South Africa.

At the height of the struggle against apartheid when African people were essentially stripped of their humanity and their identity – Mzimba used his brush and canvas to restore their dignity and stature. There was a familiarity with his subjects who were inspired by his curiosity about the different African ethnic groups across the continent.

At the peak of his career in the 80’s and 90’s, when Africans were not allowed around the table beyond their township homes but ‘good enough’ to be the help like his mother Violet, who was a domestic worker in the suburbs and his father Peter who was a driver, Mzimba put them in these ‘hallowed’ spaces – the homes, boardrooms and hotels of the ‘oppressor’ who were enamored by them. While most of these collectors superficially saw the ‘artistry’ in the work, through the familiar eyes of an Mzimba portrait, which gazed at one in such a particular way that afterwards you feel as if you are being followed, seemed to emphasize that whatever was being done behind these walls was under a hawkish watch.

To the marginalized majority, there was a familiarity as if one had encountered the person before. They saw themselves in his work. Mzimba dared to challenge the oppressor and showed that Africans were human too. He restored their humanity – an gave them a face. He celebrated their identity, their deep melanin and way of life – dark, textured and colourful. In between, he would depict how they escaped the misery of oppression through music or went about their work in the midst of the oppression – in his celebrated work depicting the Zama Zama miners (illegal gold miners) and township life.

He would find objects that represent African lives – the discarded metal basin, shovel, doors, corrugated roofs, used clothing – anything – and bring them alive by juxtaposing or superimposing his work in his compositions. It was tangible and constant reminder of the African struggle. He would use his brush to make them larger than life, and subjects as seemingly mundane at face value as fruit or vegetables – an apple, orange, cabbage or beetroot - or bring all together in one of his familiar compositions.

A humble, quiet and relatable artist, this is how he took on the struggle for liberation against apartheid - through his work, which infused optimism, humanity and dignity. That is his legacy.

Born in Dube, Soweto on the 19th September 1959, Mzimba was the only boy and the 4th born child of the late Violet (neé Mabuza) and Peter Mzimba. He discovered his love of drawing at an early age and was encouraged by his father. He dropped out of school due to the 1976 uprising when the school was closed.

At the age of sixteen he joined Mofolo Arts Centre in Soweto where he learned drawing, oil painting and pastels with Dan Rakgoathe. years later he won a bursary to study at the Art Foundation under the late Bill Ainslie. An award-winning and revered artist across various media, he worked as a professional artist based in Johannesburg until his sudden death.

At the time of his passing, he was working on a seminal collection celebrating great African women with his longstanding gallerist Everard Read. Mzimba's work graces many public, corporate and private collections worldwide.

Mzimba passed on unexpectedly on 24 June due to Covid in the arms of his wife Boitumelo while waiting to be attended at hospital.

Mzimba is survived by his wife, Boitumelo, children – Tebogo “Tebs,” Lesedi, Khanyi, Siphesihle “Malobisa,” Seti and Fili, his siblings, Betty, Julia and Sbongile and the Mzimba Family.

Return of the Gods: The Ancient Ones (2015)

‘I don’t know if I summoned these figures, or they summoned me to make them. They just developed this enormous presence and I started thinking about the notion of the gods in Western society and how we view them as either myth or fantasy or new age. For me, these five figures are absolutely benevolent. I view them as forefathers. I believe that we are all gods, we have just forgotten, and we are stuck down here repeating old patterns and habitual addictions. The Ancient Ones are memories of what we were.’

‘I am often asked about the small figures emerging from the crown of their heads. I have begun to realise that for me they represent the revealing of the spiritual self. The fact that these sculptures have fully realised figures with whole bodies shows that they are spiritually evolved beings. The men have female figures on their heads and the women have male figures on their heads. So, they also represent a marriage of the masculine and feminine and an owning of the full self, the complete self.’

‘It took me years to realise that I was interested in art that can change the world. That intent and creation can alter one’s reality. And I believe that is what art was used for in many cultures. We just don’t see it that way in contemporary Western culture. For me, every single artwork is more of a spiritual discipline about inner transformation. My work is about spiritual transformation. I like to believe that other people will feel that as well. I cannot force it, but if it happens for me then I like to believe that it can happen for others too.’

Chthonios Monumental I (2020)

The initial manifestation of Dylan Lewis’s Chthonios – a striking image of a maelstrom of forms – emerged following a six-year period of intense self-discovery. Perfectly encompassing the themes of self-actualisation, struggles within human relationships, and striving for liberation from harmful internalised indoctrination, the work concretises the turbulence of human emotions.

During lockdown in 2019, Lewis set to work on producing a monumental incarnation of an earlier work, allowing it to evolve intuitively and organically rather than through exact reproduction. The result is a visceral large-scale sculptural work which recalls Rodin’s magnum opus The Gates of Hell and William Blake’s The Lovers’ Whirlwind. Both of these saw the artists drawing on the evocative imagery of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, but vehemently eschewing any moralising allegory in favour of celebrating the full spectrum of the human experience in all its complexity. With Chthonios, Lewis extends this striking, chaotic imagery to reflect on the agony and ecstasy of trying to connect with the ‘other’ – both other human beings and with the self.

Chthonios marks a significant culmination in the narratives that have underpinned Lewis’s work from the very beginning: the searching for wholeness and self-actualisation against forced familial, cultural, and social conformity. Lewis captures the sense of the sublime that comes from standing on a precipice and witnessing the tumult. It is a view from the eye of a storm, a reckoning with the prospect of being pummelled by a chaotic maelstrom of human emotions and being unsure of whether it will utterly destroy or bring about the intense desire for wholeness.

The sculpture takes the form of large circular arrangement enclosed within a square. This contrasting of the two shapes recurs throughout a diverse array of mandala traditions in a number of world religions, throughout alchemical symbolism, and even in Jungian analytical psychology. Common throughout these various incarnations is the idea of a circle within a square as a symbol of wholeness or totality, contrasting boundlessness with lucidity. This is exactly what Chthonios represents for Dylan Lewis.

Everard Read is proud to to announce that Lady Skollie is the 10th FNB Art Prize recipient, joining a prestigious list of winners since the launch of the prize in 2011. The FNB Art Prize has since become one of the coveted visual art prizes on the African continent. In addition to a page on the online fair (taking place 6-18 November) and cash prize, Lady Skollie will be awarded an international residency to be booked in 2021-2022.

Lady Skollie (born Laura Windvogel) remarks on her win, “As someone who never fit in, someone who dropped out of art school, someone who only got South African representation at the age of 31, winning a local art prize makes me feel like my existence in it is validated.” Filled with bold colour, god-like figures and suggestive fruits, Lady Skollie’s work revolves around themes of gender, sex and the politics of lust, as well as her musings on identity.

“We are proud to announce Lady Skollie as the 10th FNB Art Prize winner. Her rendition of art has challenged societies norms to evolve; and be present through the many social challenges that we face. SUMMER 2020

Everard Read London presents its annual SUMMER exhibition - new paintings and sculpture by 20 artists, primarily from South Africa and the diaspora, but also from England, France and Italy.

The exhibition includes work by established artists at the peak of their powers, as well as younger artists beginning to make their mark.

Most works have been made during the period of lockdown imposed in many countries around the world in response to the pandemic. While the rhythm of life has changed for many of us, days of isolation are the preserve of artists for most of the time. Even so, many artists have reflected on the silent skies, empty streets and stillness around them, amplified by the consoling swell of birdsong.

GUY FERRER - NEW PAINTINGS

Hours of isolation are the preserve of many artists for most of the time, but the past several weeks of confinement have been particularly fertile for French artist, Guy Ferrer. The days have been noticeably quieter around his studio in Perpignan where Ferrer continues his investigation into the duality of life and the universe, using his artistic practice to search for meaning and share his revelations with others.

Ferrer has always found solace, nourishment and indeed delight in his studio; a spiritual sanctuary and space for creation. “The studio for the artist, is surely the place they cherish above all others. ... It's an extension of oneself, it amplifies like a drum the tragicomedy that is the life of one dedicated to the unbelievable madness to create. This is where I spend most of my time, willing the next path of discovery, finding steppingstones towards progress and poetry - and flowers to offer to others.”

Rich in symbolism and characterised by highly textured surfaces, Ferrer’s work is deeply concerned with the numinous. His relentless energy comes from a spiritual necessity to make art which has given life to a thirty-year career of making paintings and sculpture that seem to vibrate with ethereal energy and which connect with audiences across countries and cultures.

R 1.38 MILLION RAISED FOR SOUTH AFRICA'S SOLIDARITY FUND

EVERARD READ LAUNCHES SECOND DIGITAL EXHIBITION IN SUPPORT OF THE FUND
 
Everard Read galleries are humbled and delighted to announce that our digital exhibition, launched last week, raised almost R 1.4 million for South Africa's Solidarity Fund. 
 
Our heartfelt thanks to our artists and clients for their remarkable contribution.
 
For those who missed our Staring Straight to the Future exhibition, and the opportunity to acquire a work in support of the Solidarity Fund, today we are launching a second curated exhibition. Again, 50% of proceeds, after artist payments, will go directly to the Fund.

As the lockdown continues in South Africa and around the world, we hope that these digital exhibitions will continue to harness the generosity of our communities and make a small contribution towards protecting health workers at the front line and assisting those whose lives have been disrupted by the pandemic.

Liza Grobler is currently participating in a solo exhibition entitled Hard, but Soft taking place at the Glen Carlou Gallery in Stellenbosch. Curated by Pierre le Riche, this exhibition features artists who engage with the concept of surface design by showcasing textile-based works. 

Grobler is a South African artist who works with a variety of media, often exploring ideas that bring together physical, psychological spaces and historical and ecological scapes. Her practice is built around process; putting materiality and ephemerality of the objects and media she works with in tension. In 2016, she was a recipient of the Africa Centre Award and was commissioned by IZIKO Museums  to create a site-specific work for the National Gallery. Other career highlights include: a solo project for Cape Town International Art Fair (2017), a commissioned public artwork for Cape Town International Design Capital (2015) and the screening of her video work at both the ADDIS International Video Arts Festival (Ethiopia) and at MOFO for Forever Now (Tasmania and Deep Space, 2015).

Barbara Wildenboer is participating in the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK). Wildenboer will present a retrospective of her work that has been produced over the course of her last ten solo exhibitions.

The work showcased consists of collage, photo-and-paper-construction and digitally animated photographic sculpture. She uses a combination of analogue and digital processes to create work which explores phenomena such as temporality, fractal geometry and the interconnectedness of all living things. Using media images and information selected from various sources, Wildenboer constructs an alternate reality. The three dimensional paper works reflect on how humankind is affected by globalisation, economic upheavals, scarcity, political corruption, wars, epidemics and natural disasters.

Everard Read London presents the fourth edition of its Bronze Steel and Stone exhibitions – a survey of contemporary sculpture from South Africa.

From the very small to the monumental, the works are crafted in seductively smooth or textured bronze, polished granite or burnished steel. Landmarks in space, these still, silent objects are also eloquent transmitters of human experience.

Participating artists include: Deborah Bell, Nic Bladen, Arabella Caccia, Wilma Cruise, Guy du Toit, Chonat Getz, Percy Konqobe, Beckwith Kraft, Jop Kunneke, William Peers,Lionel Smit, Angus Taylor and Florian Wozniak.

Turiya Magadlela, Liza Grobler, Lyndi Sales and Michael MacGarry are amongst the many artists participating in Iziko Museum's current exhibition entitled Materiality, which is on show until the 2 August 2020.  

Dylan Lewis's second solo exhibition, Chthonios, is subject of a feature by Ishani Chetty on House and Leisure. Chetty voted the exhibition as a 'must visit' within Cape Town.

Textile artist Turiya Magadlela was commissioned by the 16th Istanbul Biennial curatorial team to create a site-specific artwork in Turkey. S’Maidical is a series of giant tapestries made of tights, which cover the ceiling, resulting in a cave-like structure. Throughout the opening week, as a performance, she continued to sew tights in the exhibition space, calling attention to labour conditions, gender disparities, as well as the intertwined histories of sexually and racially-grounded violence and abuse. Magadlela’s use of textiles also calls attention to (skin) colour, as well as referring to the context of South Africa, with allusions to black magic and fetish dolls.

The Biennial runs until 10 November.

Blessing Ngobeni in collaboration with Legate Lithography Editions (LL Edition) has recently participated in the Venice Biennale. The exhibition entitled 'Ubuntuism Re-enchanted', curated by Ruzy Rusike, draws inspiration from the poem 'The Rise of Shaka' written by Mazisi Kunene.

Kunene's poem toys with the effect of absence and presence, where excess of the latter suffocates and the former piques interest. Ngobeni draws inspiration from the dichotomy of nature and urbanisation. This exhibition is currently on display until the 4 November 2019.

Everard Read London presents: Destructure - a solo exhibition of sculpture and paintings by celebrated South African artist, Lionel Smit.

In this new body of work, Smit continues to explore themes of identity through portraiture on canvas and bronze sculptures. For the artist, the human face offers an endless source of study and his work accentuates facial characteristics through bold swathes of colour and brush techniques, highly-textured bronzes and vivid patinas.

Blessing Ngobeni's work Land Exchange has been acquired for the permanent collection by Iziko South African National Gallery

Paolo Bini was honoured with a solo booth, titled Spazi Immensi, at the recent MiArt Fair in Milan. Organised by the Intesa San Paolo Bank (the main sponsor of the Fair itself), the solo show was promoted with a monograph published by the renowned Marsilio Edition. Works will be included in the Intesa San Paolo permanent collection, which includes works by artists such as Caravaggio.

Daniel Naudé  A Decade of Seeing

Everard Read London is pleased to present A Decade of Seeing by acclaimed South African photographer, Daniel Naudé.

Over the past decade, Naudé has practised capturing and perfecting moments of stillness in nature. This exhibition encompasses a critical selection of works from his recent projects: Animal Farm (2007-2012), Sightings of the Sacred: Cattle in Uganda, Madagascar and India (2012-2014), Cattle of the Ages – Ankole cattle in South Africa - a project with South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa (2017) as well as his newest works of Xhosa cattle on the shore of the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

'There is No Time Like the Present' is a large-scale, site-specific sculpture made by Rina Stutzer for the Mall of Africa in Midrand (near Johannesburg).
 
The sculptures, at a height of 5.5m, represent the two faces of Africa: the line sculpture represents an Africa rooted in tradition; the bare bones of a continent that holds us all together. The second sculpture, built from mirror-finish stainless steel, allows us to see the wealth of opportunity and the inherent potential that lies within all of us.

Barbara Wildenboer's solo 'Eros / Thanatos' opens at Everard Read JHB on 15th November. A series of assemblages in shades of 'dark' and 'light', the collages have been used to a create a contemporary Vanitas within the context of the Anthropocene era. Wildenboer draws from her own dreams, anxieties and personal narratives and intuitively connects inner and outer worlds, present, past and future.

It took just 10 minutes for Jake Aikman's 'South Atlantic’ print, his debut collaboration with Goldmark Atelier in the UK, to sell out. Aikman's signature seascapes remind us that "we are not in control of the forces of nature, and linked to that reminder are the trials and tribulations of the viewer’s life."

ALESSANDRO PAPETTI and ARON DEMETZ

16 November - 17 December 2018

This exhibition of new paintings by Alessandro Papetti and sculpture Aron Demetz marks the first time the artists will present a collaborative show together. Many of the works were made or conceived while working in Demetz's studio in Val Gardena in northern Italy.

Papetti and Demetz share a long-standing fascination with the human figure and indeed the nexus of this collaborative project is the infinitely complex and ambivalent manifestations of the human form.

Award winning artist Blessing Ngobeni will also be exhibiting a solo show, A Note from Error at Everard Read in Johannesburg, from 15 November until 21 December.

Opening 15th November at CIRCA in Johannesburg is Polish-born Andrzej Urbanski's first solo with the JHB gallery, A03 2034/538/18. Urbanski creates large, optically-bending spaces composed of the architectural squares, triangles and hexagons of the contemporary built environment. Since his 2012 Residency in SA, Urbanski has devoted his time to the streets, cultures and social interactions of his new home, Cape Town.

Everard Read London present a solo exhibition by Johannesburg based artist Blessing Ngobeni. Fuelled by the social injustices of post-Apartheid South Africa, Ngobeni joins a distinguished lineage of artists who dare to critique the status quo. His work is said to “borrow from the language of Surrealism, the anarchy of Dada and the figurative violence of Neo-Expressionism." *

“The sacred fire is the irrepressible and permanent need to keep working in my studio, every single day, to the point of feeling guilty when for one reason or another I have to stop. And to experience some truths revealed by the work, on myself, on the nature of the world and the great mystery that surrounds everything, on aesthetics or geometry or beauty, and always in connection with the dears absents, the ones I call my invisibles-still-acting."

British sculptor William Peers’ monumental sculpture Wild Albert graces the lawn of the newly reopened Linthwaite House overlooking Lake Windermere in Britain’s Lake District.

Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, the overlapping rings play tricks with the light and the sculpture appears to float amongst the wild flowers.

 Peers lives and works in Cornwall and he follows the long history of English stone carving brought to prominence by artists such as Henry Moore and Eric Gill.

William Peers will have a solo exhibition at Everard Read London in March 2019.

South African artist Lionel Smit is one of 80 artists who have contributed their work for a striking collection of bear images, as part of a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) exhibition currently on display in China.

This is to draw much-needed attention to the cruel treatment of bears in circuses.

Peta Asia vice-president Jason Baker said: “Over 80 of the world’s most caring actors and artists have helped Peta create beautiful bear-protection pieces.”

"TOLERANCE" is composed of nine bronze sculptures, each representing a word of the word "tolerance" and suggests a religion, belief or spirituality.

Edited in six series, in Paris and Montpellier (France) and in Abu Dhabi (UEA).

TOLERANCE, pinpoints of light against the darkness of intolerance and terrorism that we are facing around the world.

At each installation, a focal point welcoming other artists, students and entire communities to join the message of Tolerance, Compassion and Brotherhood.

 "TOLÉ.RANCE" is composed of nine bronze sculptures, each representing a letter of the word "tolerance" and suggesting a religion, a belief or a spirituality.

 Published in six series, three are permanently installed on public sites in Paris and Montpellier (France), as well as in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

We are now continuing towards our goal and our vision of installing TOLERANCE, points of light against the darkness of intolerance and terrorism that we face worldwide.

​Each installation marks the territory as a focal point for other artists, students and entire communities to carry the message of Tolerance, Compassion and Fraternity.

Everard Read London presents a major exhibition of new sculptures by leading South African sculptor, Angus Taylor.
Known for his powerful, often monumental, sculptural works, Taylor works with an extraordinary range of materials from his immediate environment - Belfast granite, red jasper and the orange soil found near Johannesburg. He relishes working with challenging materials, on a scale that many sculptors find intimidating.

Art Angels Africa brought their annual charity auction to London for the first time this month, auctioning works by top South African artists. Several Everard Read artists donated works for the auction, including Beezy Bailey, Deborah Bell, Phillemon Hlungwani, Angus Taylor, Rina Stutzer, Lionel Smit, Colbert Mashile, Dylan Lewis and Nic Bladen, along with Sam Nhlengethwa and Marco Cianfanelli.

Penelope Stutterheime | Merging 5 - 27 May

Everard Read London presents an exhibition of new paintings by South African artist Penelope Stutterheime.  Based in Cape Town, this is the artist’s first solo exhibition in London.

Depicting “‘inner landscapes” has always been Stutterheime’s preoccupation. Drawing inspiration from dreams and the unconscious, her layered and textured paintings make use of intensely vibrant colour to create mesmerising abstract works.

Lionel Smit: Faces of Identity at Everard Read London, 24 February - 25 March

This exhibition comes to Everard Read London following Lionel Smit’s acclaimed solo exhibition at the Didrichsen Art Museum in Helsinki where it was seen by more than 10 000 visitors.

Faces of Identity is a powerful body of work that explores themes of identity through portraiture on canvas and bronze deconstructions. With its ubiquity but also its uniqueness, the human face offers an endless source of study. Smit’s work accentuates facial characteristics through bold swathes of colour and brush techniques, highly-textured bronzes and vivid patinas which result in the arresting work, often of monumental proportions, for which he is renowned.

My aim is to visually grasp the studio and its contents which are predominantly static, over time, so that the slow infusion of the presence of the working artist, through light and movement, impregnates the photographic image with a tangible presence and energy which cannot be seen, but definitely felt.

The Bowie/Collector sale at Sotheby's on Friday 11 November 2016 saw Norman Catherine achieve a new record for the sale of his work at auction. Catherine, who is represented by Everard Read Galleries, had three works included in David Bowie's private collection on sale. Both 'Fanagalo Store' and 'Cat Man' significantly exceeded their estimates.

Deborah Belll , leading South African artist represented by Everard Read discusses her new body of work for her forthcoming exhibition - Return of the Gods - at Everard Read Gallery London. Here we find Bell, a long time collaborator with South African legends Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge, at her most introspective best, contemplating what it is to practice art in a far flung corner of South Africa as an outsider from the global often circuitous and incestuous art dialogue which allows her to bring her own unique vision to the conversation.

Everard Read|CIRCA Galleries are pleased to announce that artist Beth Diane Armstrong has won the 2017 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for visual art. Armstrong follows in the footsteps of William Kentridge, who won the Visual Arts category in 1987, and Brett Murray in 2002.  

Scrimgeour’s table settings intrigue and fascinate, juxtaposing fragile and precious

curios with commonplace objects, exquisitely rendered. Rich in symbolism, her

work is reminiscent of still life paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, while the

use of bird’s-eye perspective creates a contemporary context for a

very traditional genre.

"I want to present my paintings as superstitious objects with bogus protective powers to bend reality in our favour. My paintings offer somehow to help you. 'Buy you time.' Or 'Reduce insignificance.’ Or 'Guarantee Afterlife.’ The squishy bodily qualities of paint, thick gestures, and sometimes outright messy application, are ideal to evoke a low-tech, talismanic object or fetish and our chaotic and often absurd strategies for controlling the vagaries of chance and guaranteeing a bright future."

Dylan Lewis's oversized wildlife sculptures reflect the vastness of South African Landscapes by Jonathan Foyle. Published in the Finincial Times on 15 October 2016.

"South African sculptor Dylan Lewis is forging the evolution of bronze. He was raised in a landscape of red soils rich in copper. His country offers some of the earliest evidence of man, such as the Cradle of Humankind, a Unesco world heritage site near Johannesburg. Here, hunters lived in caves, some of which contain bulbous, tumbling limestone stalactites — natural sculptures directly expressive of primeval forces, wrought through base material."

Everard Read I CIRCA Gallery will present a solo exhibition of work by Colbert Mashile at the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair. Colbert is an artist who has developed a unique iconographical language within South African art, often dealing with the mystical, mythological and archaic elements of traditional African culture and its legacy in present-day life.

In South Africa, hundreds of thousands of children die from AIDS every year. The recently published 'A Voyage To The Interior' explores the paintings of Gary James as well as introducing the remarkable work of his son Alexander James. 

John Meyer, a leading South African artist who is represented by Everard Read Galleries, was recently commissioned to paint Queen Elizabeth II. With his usual attention to detail (and one eye on the historical narrative). Meyer, mindful of her 90th birthday, chose to conjure an image of her 69 years ago as a young princess, riding on a beach in South Africa in 1947, in what must have been a rare moment of unbridled freedom for the young woman who was to become the world’s oldest reigning monarch, as well as Britain's longest-lived.

Queen Elizabeth II, during her 64 year reign, is the most portrayed human in recorded history, by no lesser artists than Lucian Freud and Andy Warhol. Meyer's remarkable portrayal adds to this tradition. One can only imagine how this invocation of a time so utterly different from the present must have been received. It is hoped that this unique painting will find its way to one of her special homes.

Pia Capelli: This is a turning point in your work. While in your most recent exhibition, “La pelle attraverso,” you focused on the border between the Self and the world, here you have “come back,” showing landscapes that are closer to mental spaces. I know that these works are the result of a long period of transformation. What is changing in your work?

Alessandro Papetti: I used to work on motionless things, finite thoughts: I would use my way of painting, my quick gestures, to animate the object and give it a sense of movement and speed. Now, instead, I’m working on the flow of my thoughts as they come to me, when the idea is being conceived. This has a great deal to do with memory, which usually offers images of objects that are complete and finished. Anticipating memory is impossible, I know, but it is as if over these last few months of work all I had to do was try to steal milliseconds to be able to paint the moment when an idea, a thought, is born. It was not a rational attempt; it was the need to follow, or anticipate, the flow of my thoughts.

CIRCA Gallery London is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Alessandro Papetti. Entitled, I Live Here, the exhibition is Papetti’s first in the UK and will include oil paintings as well as works on prepared paper. Many of the paintings were made at the Palazzo Poli in Rome where the artist was in residency leading up to his solo exhibition there in September 2015, while others were completed in his studio.

South African artist Shany Van den Berg, who is represented by Everard Read Galleries, has been selected for this year's BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. 

Her portrait, Self, was one of 53 selected from more than 2500 entries and this will be the fourth time the artist's work will be shown in the exhibition, previously exhibiting in 2009 '  dit is ek Gladys'  and 2010 'Bloedlyn '.

The BP Portrait Award 2016 will run from 23rd June- 4th September.

CIRCA London opened on 18 March 2016 with a group exhibition showcasing the work of exceptional contemporary artists from around the world.
